When we moved to our farm/acreage by Prud'homme we knew we would be using a cistern for our water supply. Once we moved we were filling our 3500 gallon cistern about every 3 weeks. Upon inspection we discovered several major leaks and other various issues with the equipment etc. The cost to replace the indoor basement cistern would have been between $40,000 and $100,000, we just couldn't see that as reasonable. After much research and seeking answers we settled on a liner. It took some time to dry out the area, get rid of mold and make a couple of corrections but once we installed the liner we now fill the cistern about every 3 months or so. This is dependent on water usage and number of people in household but it sure made a difference for us. The other major factor is that now the water we drink and bath in is encased in a NSF60/61 or food grade liner rather than 40 year old cinder blocks - much cleaner and safer.
